Company Background
CableRunner North America is owned by CableRunner Austria GmbH; CableRunner Austria was founded by the City of Vienna, Austria Water and Sewer Department that has hundreds of years experience in municipal sewer system management (actually, since Roman times). Vienna took on the challenge of deploying fiber optic cables on their own to create an advanced sewer management system. Once the cables were placed in the sewer, remaining space within the cable profiles were leased to telecom companies. This created a new revenue-generating vehicle for the city and provided a low-cost installation method for telecom companies. High-speed communications became readily available to homes, businesses and institutions within densely populated areas as well as outlying regions, wherever the sewer lines extended. In the last fifteen years, Vienna established itself as the world’s leading authority of in-sewer fiber optic deployment. CableRunner NA technology is increasingly being used in municipalities around the world. We also contribute to setting industry standards through ASTM International, one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world.
